My name is Karen Wright
I am a licensed Nutritionist in New York State, trained as a functional nutritionist. I am passionate about helping people transform their health using delicious foods, movement and by detoxifying their living environment.
My own healing journey
I have been interested in eating healthy my entire life. Just for the fun of it I would read cookbook recipes and then create my own using ingredients which were healthy choices. My meals were mostly cooked at home with lots of vegetables. When my kids got sick I would use old wives tales like chicken soup to help and used the doctor as the last resort.
This worked well for me until September 11 when the planes hit the World Trade Center. I was working at 7 World Trade Center at the time. This was the last building to fall that day. I was on the street when the second plane hit the building, knocked unconscious by a metal beam and covered with toxic debris. I am not sure how much of the toxic debris I ingested but over the next few months my health declined rapidly until I was in a lot of pain and unable to walk. The pain medication made me feel worse so I abandoned taking it. I went from doctor to doctor looking for help and questioning being toxic from September 11th.
Many of the doctors told me that I could not get sick from those toxins. This did not make sense to me. I was healthy before the attack and not afterwards. I was able to find some doctors that were able to help me like Dr. Zinberg and Dr. Calabria. This was a really difficult time in my life. Now instead of reading cookbooks to learn recipes I was reading books about nutrition, herbs and alternative practices. Through my research I was able to find nutrients that supported my body and created a protocol that would help me return to an active life.
As I was busy finding how to fix my health issues in the back of my mind I kept thinking about all the people who were not getting nutritional help. And once I learned about mold sensitivity syndrome, I know I had only one choice and that was to become formally educated so I could help others nutritionally as I had done myself so they too could live a healthy and vibrant life.
My Training and Experience
I am a lifelong learner. My first career was as a political analyst at ABC News. This was quite a challenging job that taught me the value of good detective work. These skills come in handy when handling my toughest nutrition cases.
The long hours at ABC News were not conducive to having a family. I left there and got certified as a computer programmer. Until September 11th I worked as a programmer and technical manager in the financial sector. Programming is another job that requires detective skills. After healing myself, I earned a masters of science degree in Human Nutrition and Functional Medicine and a doctor of traditional naturopathy.
My education did not stop there; I became certified as a Master in the Transformational Coaching Method, a HealthRHYTHMS facilitator which is an evidenced based protocol using drums to create a community and enhance immune function while finding a personal inner rhythm. I am also trained as a detoxification specialist and Ulan Nutritional Systems Nutrition Response TestingSM practitioner.
Having worked in corporate America, as a research analyst, a computer programmer and manager; I am familiar with challenges people face daily on their jobs and have successfully helped people overcome them. I am a frequent speaker at corporate events, giving men and woman the tools to move up the corporate ladder and nutritional tips. I am the author of the book “Is It Mold? A Holistic Approach to Managing a Commonly Overlooked Condition” and a contributing author to the book “Visionaries with Guts.” I am currently training to become a Master Herbalist.
